Considering a career in consultancy? Not sure whether consulting is for you, what type of consulting to consider or what consultancies look for? In this interactive session, James challenges perceptions of consulting, explaining why companies hire consultants, what the growth areas are, what consulting life is like and some tips on securing that dream job. Consulting isn’t for everybody so James facilitates an exercise to check whether passions align with a consulting career. He gives a frank, insightful account of what it takes to be successful. Pivoting your Career

1 to 2-hour in-person interactive workshop.

Thinking of moving into consultancy? Struggling to present your skills and experience in the right way? James shares how he handled two redundancies, lived in several countries, and learned to think strategically about his career. Students leave with a better feel for what their career ‘sweet spot’ could be. They develop greater clarity over how to present their skills, how to rebrand themselves, strategies for changing industry, function or geography and how to achieve the best chance of moving into consulting without restarting their career. Ideal for masters and MBA students with 3+ year working experience.

An interactive workshop that can combine any of the following:

Consulting Project Preparation

Half to Full-day in-person workshop

The aim of this session is to prepare students who are embarking on their consulting/capstone projects. They learn core consulting skills and use their learning to develop their own problem statements, MECE issue trees and a set of tailored questions to ask their clients. They leave with the confidence to think strategically and to challenge their clients, ultimately bringing the students, clients and the business school greater value from the program. Ideal for undergrads, masters and MBA students who know their project briefs and teams but haven't met with their clients yet.

Consulting Market Update

This session is based on the introduction to consulting workshop but with more focus on the current consulting market in your locale and internationally. James explains the major sources of consulting spend in your country, and what the growth areas and hot sectors are. He also presents salary data and levels at which aspiring consultants are likely to enter each of the major strategy and management consultancies. James talks through which consultancies are hiring and shares example opportunities, both permanent roles and internships. Ideal for undergrads, masters and MBA students.

Case Interview Workshop

1 to 2-hour in-person or virtual workshop.

Many consulting, finance and tech firms use case interviews to assess the calibre of prospective recruits. In this highly interactive session, students learn why companies use case study interviews, the different types of case study and how to prepare for them. James explains what recruiters are looking for, the different types of case study and a simple 3-step approach to being successful. Students have an opportunity to work through examples from Bain, BCG, McKinsey and Deloitte in groups so they need to be prepared to get involved. Ideal for Undergrads, Masters and MBS students.

Immersive Consulting Skills Course

Half to Full-day in-person course.

James gives students the opportunity to learn and to practice consulting skills, preparing them for a successful career.  Students learn 'the art of problem solving' and the soft skills worthy of a great consultant. They learn about 'consulting mindset', the different roles a consultant takes, the 'Y-model', and building trust with clients. They develop problem statements, initial hypotheses and MECE issue trees. They practice using the 80/20 rule and the pyramid rule, to develop 'kick-ass' slides and communicate like an MBB consultant.

Case Study

Competitions

1 to 2 day in-person competition.

An immersive experience using real scenarios faced by management consultants. Students work in teams, solving a problem for a hypothetical client and presenting their analysis, recommendations and next steps. All participants receive a certificate and the winners receive a prize. The competition is best run after a consulting skills course as teams are expected to develop a problem statement, initial hypotheses, and a MECE issue tree. An external consulting company can be invited to role-play as the client, to give feedback and to judge the competition.
